Update on Gear

- 3.15.20094 Comments

Some of you guys have been asking for an update on our gear situation. So we wanted to give an unofficial update. If you did not hear, a couple of weeks ago, our van and trailer (and every piece of equipment we owned) were stolen. Two and a half moths earlier the same trailer was broken into and our gear stolen. So to have this happen twice within three months was a little overwhelming! I mean, seriously! Not to mention we leave for tour The Rock and Worship Road Show on Tuesday. But last week Dallas Police were able to recover our van and trailer. So that was awesome. There was a lot of damage to the van and trailer, but still it was great to get those back. The gear was still gone however. So some good news, some bad.

But it has been amazing for us to see things come together in such cool ways. We have had some amazing friends let us borrow gear and help us replace what gear we needed for the tour coming up. We have definitely been provided for. A big thanks to PRS Guitars and Monster Cables for helping us get some important pieces in places. Also, we could not be doing this without the help of MercyMe and Tenth Avenue North on the tour. They have been such a huge help.

And, most importantly, thank you guys! We have gotten so many messages and phones calls just letting us know you were praying for us and wanted to help. It has been awesome.

So that is the latest. Still a big challenge for us to overcome, but we are excited to get back on the road and see you guys on the tour!

“Hope Now” – Behind The Song

- 3.12.200912 Comments

Hope Now?

It’s crazy that we started our band Addison Road over seven years ago back in college. Many of you had not heard of us until this past year when our album was released nationwide, but we’ve been busy writing, recording, and touring all of that time. “Hope Now” is a song that is currently being played on radio stations across the country but it was actually written in a crummy apartment over five years ago.

The whole band was living together in one apartment – Jenny and Ryan had been married less than a year and were living in one room. We converted the living room into a bedroom for Jeff, Travis’ room was ridiculously small and sparks flew out of the outlets in my room, not ideal conditions! We made a trip to Nashville around that time to meet with industry people and one meeting had a profound impact on me. We were playing our songs for a manager there and he said he loved our music, loved our sound, but he felt like our songs lacked any hope. He said we should remember the hope that God had given us and to tell people about it. I was blown away by that idea.

That day we made the thirteen hour ride back to Texas but all I could think about was what that guy had said. When we finally made it back home I got in bed and was trying to go to sleep when I literally heard the words and music, “Everything rides on hope now” playing in my head. So I got out of bed and picked up a guitar and quietly wrote the song while trying not to wake up the whole house.

Five years later it is so cool and crazy to be playing concerts and see people singing along to those words. To have people come talk to us after shows and tell us about how God used that song to give them hope is amazing. I know that God gave us that song to give his hope back to people and that is something I feel so humbled by and grateful for. I know I’ve been carried by Him all my life.

The Biggest Loser Influence

So last night my fiance and I are sitting on the couch about to watch ‘The Biggest Loser’. As the show starts I think about the chicken nachos piled high with sour cream, guacamole, and cheese that I had for dinner. Over the next two hours I sat on the couch watching the show. Two hours people. That’s a lot of time to watch other people lose weight. I don’t even work out, but watching this show makes me want to run, work out and eat better. The people on the show have a huge influence on everyone. You can actually see people on TV change their lives for the best. So with a full stomach of nachos and chicken, I decided I want to try and be healthier. Thanks ‘Biggest Loser’! We’ll see how it goes.

The Old And The New

- 3.11.200911 Comments

Last May I was trying to help move gear before a show when I dropped whatever I was carrying on my big toe.

It was the worst pain ever and I hated myself all night for trying to help. I should know by now to drop the girl card and stay away from any manual labor. But I want to be a team player, so until this past summer I really did try and do my share of unloading the trailer. Thank God those days are behind me!

Anyways, by the end of the night my right toe had a big, ugly black spot on it. It was close enough to the skin that I thought maybe I had bruised my toe, but it was actually the nail. (PS right now I feel queasy talking about this. I hate the subject of injured nails and toenails and I really, really hate the Lamisil commercials where they tear the “animated” toenail back and see the little bugs running around inside there. Ugggghhhh. It always makes my stomach turn).

I never had a big black spot on a nail before but I soon learned that it was there to stay. June rolled around, then July, then August and I still had an ugly black toe. I went to get a pedicure in September and they carefully scrubbed around the black blob. My birthday came in November and still, the permanent black toe saw me into my 28th year of life. Around Christmas someone saw it and said, “You STILL have a black toe???” I was pretty sure this would never, ever, ever go away. I would permanently have an old man, scabby, dried up blood, big toe that would scare my children away and keep Ryan from ever rubbing the ole feet again.

Yesterday it fell off.

And it was weird. I guess I didn’t realize it was making its way up to the top of my toe, but low and behold, there it was. And when it fell off I just happened to notice. And there was already another toenail there underneath it.

People see signs and meanings in things all the time. They are usually big, important things. But there I sat yesterday, black toenail in my hand, deep in thought, and it dawned on me… it’s a new day.

The old has fallen off and the new has already begun. I was excited to have my toe back. But more excited that right there in front of me was a visible reminder that what is dark and sometimes never ending, will actually one day end. It will fall off. And underneath there will be a new beginning.

Who knew a toenail could cause such an awe-inspiring moment? I thought about saving it, the toenail, but that’s disgusting. I threw it in the toilet and watched it swirl around and go down as if I was saying good-bye to a pet goldfish, and then I left the toilet in deep thought. Humph. Just like that and it was gone.
